Many sections of the LT PL, a FITS read/writer, an object locator, a stellar catalogue matching program etc., had code written to specifically perform the task as part of LT PL, but during the time taken to evolve the PL into a workable system several much larger groups have also written code to accomplish these functions. Often those groups have concentrated uniquely on that task and so have therefore been able to spend more time on aspects such as error checking, memory management etc. Due to this some of the LT code has been replaced with third party software. The very fact that this is possible is encouraging, indicating that the modular infra-structure of the LT PL was correctly initiated. Chapter 5 outlines this in more detail.
The next chapter shows the construction of a prototype PL constructed to see if PL photometric reduction is possible and to gain an insight into the inherent difficulties faced during the construction of an automated reduction system.
