Recently a major restructuring proposal by
SL, to update and keep pace with rapidly
changing technology, has recommended that existing open source software be adopted into
new applications and structured programming methods be explored, such that the wholesale
rewriting of software can be avoided and the reuse of code be exploited. Arguments for the
migration of the astronomical community away from
FORTRAN (all versions) towards C are
also presented, along with a movement away from the “.ndf” data structure towards the
FITS format. The movement of the UK’s Astronomical Software Library towards this
“new” style of working shows the forward thinking integrated into the
LT PL. Since
the
SL document (see
Giaretta et al.,
2001) has only recently become available the
contents of this chapter, which independently covers similar topics, have not been
changed.
