Recently a major restructuring proposal by SL, to update and keep pace with rapidly changing technology, has recommended that existing open source software be adopted into new applications and structured programming methods be explored, such that the wholesale rewriting of software can be avoided and the reuse of code be exploited. Arguments for the migration of the astronomical community away from FORTRAN (all versions) towards C are also presented, along with a movement away from the “.ndf” data structure towards the FITS format. The movement of the UK’s Astronomical Software Library towards this “new” style of working shows the forward thinking integrated into the LT PL. Since the SL document (see Giaretta et al.2001) has only recently become available the contents of this chapter, which independently covers similar topics, have not been changed.
